Our Story

Denman Place Mall was initially developed by J.A. ''Sandy'' Reid in 1966. Born in Winnipeg, he moved to Vancouver in 1951 and over the years had developed a reputation as one of Western Canada''s leading land developers. His fertile mind and forward thinking envisioned a city within a city, a place for sophisticated urban living. Along with his partners J.A. Forsythe and William Pinkerton as well as the firm of William Wilding Architects, the original conception was going to cost about $10 million and be the first ''vertical neighbourhood'' in Vancouver. It would be an apartment complex of 48 storeys with on-the-doorstep shopping and leisure facilities, one of the highest apartment residences in the British Empire. Ultimately, however, the complex was modified to 35 storeys and was owned by Confederation Life and known as the Denman Place Inn. In June 27th, 1969 the doors opened to Denman Place Mall and had 22 stores, with Super Valu considered an anchor tenant and coming into the Mall later in the Summer.

In 1983, C.T. Management purchased the complex and the residence became the Denman Place Inn. In 1986, Ramada became involved in the management of the complex and renamed the hotel, as the apartments had become, the Ramada Renaissance.

In 1989, the hotel was purchased by the Okabe Corporation and renamed the Coast Plaza Suite Hotel at Stanley Park. The Mall has seen many changes over the years but has remained operating throughout, largely due to the loyalty of the neighbourhood and a certain tenacity and will to survive.

In 1999, the Mall celebrated its 30th Anniversary, truly making Denman Place Mall ''The Little Mall That Could'', and ''Decidedly Different, Definitely Unique''.

The property was so sold in the fall of 2007, the Mall still has over 20 stores and services, with anchor stores such as No Frills, HSBC Bank and Shoppers Drug Mart.

The Coast Plaza Hotel & Suites and Denman Fitness closed their doors in late 2017. Over the next two years, the tower will be renovated; when completed it will become a boutique hotel and residential rental units. The Shoreline is a renter's paradise, distinctive by nature. Units available beginning early 2020.

Denman Place Mall is proud to be Your West End Neighbourhood Mall for nearly 50 years.
